Established under the Cancer Prevention and Control Act (No. 15 of 2012),

The National Cancer Institute of Kenya (NCI-K) stands at the forefront of cancer prevention and control in our nation.

We are dedicated to coordinating a comprehensive health sector response to the growing cancer burden in Kenya.

Mission, Vision, and Motto

Mission: To provide leadership, oversight, and coordination of rights-centered cancer prevention and control through resource mobilization, regulation of practice, policy advisory, research, capacity building, public education, and maintaining the national cancer registry.
Vision: A World Class Authority in Cancer Prevention and Control.
Motto: Towards a Cancer-Free Nation.

Objectives and Purpose

  1. Promote public awareness about cancer causes, consequences, prevention, and control.
  2. Protect the human rights and civil liberties of individuals with cancer
  3. Combat discrimination in all its forms
  4. Ensure provision of basic health care and social services
  5. Promote safety and universal precautions in cancer treatment
  6. Address and eradicate conditions that cause and aggravate cancer spread
  7. Promote access to quality and affordable cancer diagnostic and treatment services
  8. Ensure sustainable capacity for cancer prevention and control

Our Mandate

The National Cancer Institute of Kenya is established pursuant to the cancer prevention and control act, No. 15 of 2012. The mandate of NCI as outlined in the cancer prevention and control act, No. 15 of 20121 is:
Cabinet Secretary Advisory
Advise the Cabinet Secretary on matters relating to the treatment and care of persons with cancer and to advise on the relative priorities to be given to the implementation of specific measures.
Secure the establishment of hospitals
Encourage and secure the establishment of hospitals, vocational treatment and care centres and other institutions for the welfare and treatment of persons with cancer in all counties of the Republic.
Secure provision of diagnostic, treatment, rehabilitation
Encourage and secure provision of diagnostic, treatment, rehabilitation and other medical care to persons with cancer in those institutions.
Co-ordinate cancer services
Co-ordinate services provided in Kenya for the welfare and treatment of persons with cancer and to implement programmes for vocational guidance and counseling.
Data collection and analysis
Collect, analyze and disseminate all data useful in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
International Collaborations
Collaborate with international institutions for the purpose of collecting for the Register and cataloging, storing and disseminating the results of cancer research undertaken in any country for the use of any person involved in cancer research in any country.
Large-scale production or distribution
Establish and support the large-scale production or distribution of specialized biological materials and other therapeutic substances for research and set standards of safety and care for persons using such materials.
Ensure data accuracy
Ensure that accurate figures of persons with cancer are obtained in the country for purposes of planning.
Avail information and technical assistance
Provide access to available information and technical assistance to all institutions, associations and organizations concerned with the welfare and treatment of persons with cancer, including those controlled and managed by the Government.
Ensure secure care of cancer patients
Encourage and secure the care of persons with cancer within their communities and social environment.
Establish and support measures
Establish and support measures that seek to eradicate conditions that cause and aggravate the spread of cancer.
Prevent discrimination
Recommend measures to prevent discrimination against persons with cancer.
Protect Cancer Patient rights and information
Generally, to carry out measures for public information on the rights of persons with cancer and the provisions of this Act.
Provision of training
Encourage and participate in the provision of training on cancer prevention and control.

Directorates

The Institute is organized in four technical directorates and Seven administrative divisions that perform diversified functions.

1. Standards and Quality Assurance

The Directorate is established pursuant to Section 34 and Section 36 of the Cancer Prevention and Control Act, No.15 of 2012, to regulate cancer prevention and control interventions to ensure ethical practice.The directorate is responsible for setting standards for quality assurance; Inspection of Cancer Management Centres to ensure compliance to the set standards ,Registration and Accreditation of the Cancer Management Centres.The directorate is also responsible for maintaining high-quality, transparent, and trustworthy research in cancer prevention and care through its ethical Review Committee

2. Prevention and Control Directorate

The Directorate is established pursuant to Section 29 (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) of the Cancer Prevention and Control Act No.15 of 2012 to promote cancer prevention and control through Information Education and Communication; coordination of cancer screening and vaccination programmes; early detection, diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation programs of persons affected by cancer. In addition, it is responsible for capacity-building to include training, education and coordination of Fellowship programme for cancer prevention and control. It responsible for coordinating decentralized cancer prevention services in the counties through NCI-K Regional Offices.

3. Research And Data Informatics Directorate

The Directorate is established to coordinate and execute cancer research as provided for in the Cancer Prevention and Control Act of 2012. It is responsible for identifying research priorities to inform policy and practice in cancer prevention, diagnostic and treatment. It is also responsible for establishment of, The National Cancer Research Reference Centre and Conducting of Clinical Trials. It is responsible for establishment and maintenance of the National Cancer Registry for cancer surveillance and information to support policy formulation and advisory for cancer prevention and control decisions at different levels in the country. In addition, it is responsible for ensuring safety, efficacy, quality, availability , affordability and accessibility of Oncology Commodities and Technologies.

4. Strategy, Partnership And Resource Mobilization Directorate

The Directorate is responsible for overseeing strategic planning, performance management of the Institute, partnerships, resource mobilization and quality and risk management coordination.
